The Internal Affairs Division is responsible for investigating all allegations of serious misconduct and corruption involving all sworn members of the Department, as well as complaints and incidents involving all non-sworn members. The commanding officer of the Internal Affairs Division reports directly to the Police Commissioner.
Additionally, Division personnel monitor drug-screening tests administered to police officers and probationary police officers, and initiate other specific investigations directed by the Police Commissioner. The Internal Affairs Division’s staff is available upon call to respond to any unusual incident or critical incident involving a member of the Department on a twenty-four hour basis.
Division members also attend community meetings upon mutual request. The purpose of theses meetings is to promote understanding and cooperation between the community and the Police Department.
Internal Affairs Division personnel also cooperate with the Police Department’s Professional Standards Review Committee. Division personnel supply all the investigative reports for incidents the Committee reviews and attend Committee meetings.
