TRAFFIC ALERT *** Stew Leonard Drive will be closed for the next few hours, avoid the surrounding area

Due to a transformer malfunction in the vicinity of 981 Saw Mill River Rd, Stew Leonard Drive will be closed for an extended period of time which will impact rush hour traffic. Residents and commuters are advised to avoid the area and plan accordingly. This incident has also affected traffic on Sprain Rd off of Jackson Ave and any entrance or exit off of the NYS Thruway leading towards Ridge Hill Blvd or Stew Leonard Drive. Traffic on the Saw Mill River Parkway by the Lawrence St exit is also affected, causing additional traffic delays.

The transformer malfunction has also caused sporadic power outages in the surrounding area. Con Edison is actively working in an attempt to resolve the issue.


Yonkers Police issue 70 summonses and impound 2 vehicles during weekend traffic enforcement detail

The Yonkers Police Department conducted a traffic enforcement detail over this past weekend specifically in the area of Central Park Avenue. The enforcement detail comes in response to numerous community complaints of drag racing, speeding, and excessive noise from vehicles within the area.

While conducting enforcement duties, Officers observed two vehicles that were involved in an illegal speed contest. These vehicles were stopped by Officers and those vehicle operators were issued summonses for an illegal speed contest and drag racing. Both vehicles were subsequently impounded with the potential of being seized by the Yonkers Police Department as an outcome of the incident.

As a result of the enforcement detail, a total of 70 summonses were issued to violators with 38 specifically issued for excessive speed and 14 specifically issued for loud muffler/exhaust over the span of the two day period.

PUBLIC SAFETY ALERT *** Additional POWER OUTAGES reported in 3rd, 4th Precincts - check on vulnerable persons

Due to ongoing electrical feeder issues, additional power outages have been reported in scattered areas of the 3rd and 4th Precincts (west side) including Riverdale Avenue, Water Grant Street, Van der Donck Street. Con Edison is aware of the problem and has multiple crews working to restore power as soon as possible.

Please check on any vulnerable persons who may be living in the affected areas, especially elderly persons who rely upon electrical power for primary care. The Yonkers Police and Fire Departments are actively checking on reported vulnerable populations at this time, however if you require assistance please call (914) 377-7900 or dial 9-1-1 if it is an emergency.

 

 


PRESS RELEASE *** Yonkers Police Detectives continue stabbing investigation after assault victim dies

Yonkers, NY – On Thursday, May 23, 2019, at approximately 12:37 AM, members of the Yonkers Police Department responded to 1 Schroeder Street on a report of a group fight with a male stabbed in the neck. Upon arrival officers located the victim with an apparent life-threatening laceration to his neck; first responders rendered medical aid to the victim and transported him to a local area trauma center where he was placed on artificial life support and listed in grave condition. The area was cordoned off and a criminal investigation was initiated.

Detectives from the Major Case Unit and Crime Scene Unit responded to the scene, interviewing subjects and witnesses, reviewing surveillance video, and processing forensic evidence. Investigation has yielded that the victim and a group on Schroeder Street, who were known to each other, engaged in a dispute that escalated into violence when a suspect emerged from the group and allegedly struck out at the victim with a sharp instrument causing severe injury to the victim’s neck; the victim collapsed at scene and the suspect fled the area. Investigators are working the case and actively developing information in an effort to identify the perpetrator and effect an arrest.

The victim recently died as a result of his injury; he is identified as Kentrail NEWTON, a 25-year-old resident of Warburton Avenue this City. The City of Yonkers and Yonkers Police Department offers its sincere condolences to the NEWTON family.
