YONKERS, NY – June 7, 2018 – Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano today joined members of the Yonkers City Council, Yonkers Board of Education, Yonkers Federation of Teachers and Superintendent of Schools Dr. Edwin M. Quezada, to present the School of the Month Award for May 2018 to the deserving administration, faculty, staff, parents and students at Yonkers
Montessori Academy in the City of Yonkers. Under the leadership of Principal Dr. Eileen Rivera, Yonkers Montessori Academy, Pre-K through 12th grade, is achieving great success through their many programs and opportunities that offer hands-on experience both in and outside of the classroom. Montessori Academy boasts a 94% graduation rate and received over $7 million in college financial aid secured by the 2018 senior high school class.
In addition, students at Yonkers Montessori have recently participated in an intensive field study Intersession Program, offering courses that enable them to experience and explore different areas of the world, history, cultures and industries, outside of the classroom.
Also, community engagement and volunteerism has remained a prominent goal of Yonkers Montessori Academy within the local community and beyond.
“Yonkers Montessori Academy has achieved academic success consistently this year in each grade and that’s started at the top with its leadership, and made its way down to the students,” said Mayor Spano. “The administrators, teachers and staff should be proud of the work they’ve accomplished. Exposing our young ones to real world experiences at an early age is something that is crucial to their early child hood development.”
“On behalf of the Board of Education Trustees, we congratulate the entire Montessori community on receiving this well-deserved award,” noted Board of Education President Rev. Steve Lopez. “The administrators, teachers and support staff are totally focused on the children’s success. Through their ongoing support and with the help of the families, they’ve had an excellent school year that deserves this honor.”
“Yonkers Montessori’s Principal Dr. Eileen Rivera, along with her teachers and staff, have consistently provided a cohesive academic program for students to succeed in,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Edwin M. Quezada. “Dr. Rivera is cultivating a learning community where everyone achieves together – I am so proud of the entire Yonkers Montessori Academy family.”
In addition to being honored by the City of Yonkers, Tom Esposito from McGraw-Hill Education awarded Yonkers Montessori School with a $5,000 gift certificate to use towards educational materials courtesy of the company.
Mayor Spano’s School of the Month recognition program began in January 2014 as a way to celebrate the significant academic success, extracurricular achievements and community volunteerism of Yonkers’ students, teachers, administration and staff at Yonkers Public Schools.
