The Refuse Disposal Division is responsible for the transportation and disposal of the City’s solid waste, recycling, refuse and debris material. It is also responsible for the administration of the refuse disposal facility/recycling center located on Saw Mill River Road. It collects and recycles about 8,000 tons of pulp and 3,000 tons of commingles annually.
The Recycling Center accepts and disposes of all recyclable materials. The Division is also responsible for all roll-off container service to multi-family dwellings, as well as coordinating the recycling activities of those dwellings, in accord with State recycling mandates.
The Division screens, processes and reclaims waste rubble that is created during road construction, at its Organic Transfer Yard. The Organic Center accepts, processes and recycles leaves and brush that is brought there by citizens of Yonkers and by commercial landscapers with green waste from their clients’ Yonkers homes. In a typical year, the Division processes about 9,500 tons of organic yard waste.
