The written examination is designed to evaluate knowledge, skills, and/or abilities in the following areas:
- Ability to learn and apply information
- Basic arithmetic
- Reading comprehension
- Situational judgement
Physical Strength/Agility Exam
The physical strength/agility exam is designed to test the ability of the individual to perform, in a reasonable manner, the duties and responsibilities of a Firefighter such as climbing a ladder, pulling a fire hose, and lifting fire equipment. Applicants will have the opportunity to go through the physical strength/agility course before the actual exam. To assist in preparing for the physical portion of the exam, each individual course is demonstrated in a series of videos, provided at the link below.

Applicants who lack sufficient educational qualifications are encouraged to participate in free training courses and receive counseling information for the High School Equivalency Diploma. For more information, please contact the Recruitment Office at (914) 308-7071.
If you feel you currently do not meet the criteria to satisfy any of the requirements, you may continue the application process, but you should contact the Firefighter Recruitment Office regarding how you can obtain the qualifications you need for the appointment.
