Please note that due to the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic and the current staff reduction and other guidelines issued by the Governor’s office, Building Department offices will remain closed to public walk-in traffic until further notice.
DHB staff will continue to monitor departmental emails and phone lines remotely and process file requests. Staff will assist applicants in preparing email permit applications and insuring that all required information is provided prior submission. DHB personnel will prioritize response to emergency life safety complaints.
Construction Inspections may be requested however, inspections will only be scheduled if:
- No one in the home currently has any illness, including: cold, headache, digestive issues, fever, cough and/or shortness of breathe or if they just generally feel unwell.
- No one in the home has traveled outside the United States or recently had contact with a person suspected or confirmed to be infected with COVID-19 in the 14 days prior to the requested inspection date.
If the answer to either question is yes, the visit WILL NOT be scheduled. The visit maybe re-scheduled 14 days after the occupant is symptom free or after their return. (Depending on the type and location of the requested inspection an inspector accept alternative methods of demonstrating compliance including but not limited to third party certifications which are to include an affidavit certifying the work along with time stamped photographs and a written inspection report signed and sealed by a qualified design professional. Other alternatives which allow the inspector to determine compliance remotely including live video conferencing may be considered on a case by case basis).
Sign Permit Billing has been postponed for (60) sixty days, no late fees will be assessed until 30 days after the new invoice date.

(Revised March 27, 2020)
Please be advised in accordance with Governors Executive Order 202.6, revised March 27, 2020 to clarify the guidance previously provided relating to construction activities. This includes skilled trades such as electricians, plumbers and other related construction firms and professionals. While construction for essential infrastructure or for emergency repair and safety purposes may continue the revised order requires that All non-essential construction must shut down. For purposes of this order construction work does not include a single worker, who is the sole employee/worker on a job site.
The following constructions may continue at this time:
- Emergency construction, (e.g. a project necessary to protect health and safety of the occupant
- Work necessary to safely secure and shutdown a work site.
- Essential construction including the construction of essential infrastructure including roads, bridges, transit facilities, utilities, hospitals or health care facilities, affordable housing, and homeless shelters.
At every site, where work is permitted to continue either for essential or emergency construction, proper precautions and compliance with CDC recommendations is required. This includes maintaining social distancing at elevators/meals/entry and exit locations, providing adequate sanitary facilities, and compliance with CDC recommendations. Sites that cannot maintain distance and safety best practices must close. Enforcement will be provided by the State in coordination with the city/local governments. This will include fines of up to $10,000 per violation.

We issue building permits and certificates of occupancy, conduct inspections and investigate complaints regarding housing and building construction.
REMINDER! Before obtaining a permit to renovate an existing dwelling of 1 to 3 families, the City of Yonkers requires a Home Improvement Contractor's License which can be obtained from the CONSUMER PROTECTION BUREAU.
