Please note that due to the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic and the current staff reduction and other guidelines issued by the Governor’s office, Building Department offices will remain closed to public walk-in traffic until further notice.
DHB staff will continue to monitor departmental emails and phone lines remotely and process file requests. Staff will assist applicants in preparing email permit applications and insuring that all required information is provided prior submission. DHB personnel will prioritize response to emergency life safety complaints.
Construction Inspections may be requested however, inspections will only be scheduled if:
- No one in the home currently has any illness, including: cold, headache, digestive issues, fever, cough and/or shortness of breathe or if they just generally feel unwell.
- No one in the home has traveled outside the United States or recently had contact with a person suspected or confirmed to be infected with COVID-19 in the 14 days prior to the requested inspection date.
If the answer to either question is yes, the visit WILL NOT be scheduled. The visit maybe re-scheduled 14 days after the occupant is symptom free or after their return. (Depending on the type and location of the requested inspection an inspector accept alternative methods of demonstrating compliance including but not limited to third party certifications which are to include an affidavit certifying the work along with time stamped photographs and a written inspection report signed and sealed by a qualified design professional. Other alternatives which allow the inspector to determine compliance remotely including live video conferencing may be considered on a case by case basis).
Sign Permit Billing has been postponed for (60) sixty days, no late fees will be assessed until 30 days after the new invoice date.

The Yonkers Department of Housing and Buildings (DHB) is responsible for safeguarding the health, safety and welfare of Yonkers residents, business and property owners in the area of housing and building code enforcement. We issue building permits and certificates of occupancy, conduct inspections and investigate complaints regarding housing and building construction.
REMINDER! Before obtaining a permit to renovate an existing dwelling of 1 to 3 families, the City of Yonkers requires a Home Improvement Contractor's License which can be obtained from the CONSUMER PROTECTION BUREAU.
