City of Yonkers Honors Memorial Day with Citywide Military Motorcade & Virtual Ceremony
YONKERS, NY – May 22, 2020 – Due to the cancellation of the City’s annual ceremonies, Yonkers Mayor Spano today announced the City will commemorate Memorial Day on May 25th with a special citywide military motorcade featuring military and first responder vehicles. Prior to the motorcade, Mayor Spano will host a virtual remembrance ceremony at Yonkers City Hall’s Washington Park via Facebook LIVE.
“Despite our inability to gather as a community to honor our war heroes, Yonkers will continue to pay tribute to those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms,” said Mayor Spano. “We will not let this day go by without rightfully and respectfully remembering our Yonkers residents who gave their today for our tomorrow. Thank you to Councilman John Rubbo and our Yonkers Police, Fire and emergency personnel for organizing such a beautiful tribute.”
Yonkers’ Memorial Day Motorcade will begin at 11AM at JFK Marina and make its way across the city, visiting and passing the city’s VFW Posts and war memorials. Residents are asked to stand outside to view the procession while practicing social distancing. The motorcade’s complete route can be found at www.yonkersny.gov and @CityofYonkers on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Preceding the motorcade, residents will be able to view Mayor Spano’s virtual Memorial Day ceremony on his Facebook page, @MayorMikeSpano, at 10AM.
“It is our duty as Americans to honor and remember our fallen heroes even during these unprecedented times,” said Yonkers Councilman John Rubbo, Fourth District. “The sacrifices we make today dealing with this pandemic pale in comparison to those made by the hundreds of Yonkers men and women who gave of themselves for our way of life. I look forward to seeing our residents along the route to pay homage to our city, country and heroes.”
