7th Annual Yonkers Arts Weekend Hits The Streets May 16-17
YONKERS, NY – February 18, 2020 – Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano today announced that the City of Yonkers will host its seventh annual Yonkers Arts Weekend (YAW), a celebration of the thriving and diverse arts community in the City of Yonkers, Saturday, May 16th and Sunday, May 17th.
Since its inception in 2014, YAW has created a prominent arts district in the City of Yonkers, several city galleries have opened, and dozens of local and international renowned muralists and artists have contributed to the City’s downtown revival under the leadership of Mayor Mike Spano. YAW attracts more than 10,000 visitors a year to city galleries, the Carpet Mills Arts District, Hudson River Museum, and Untermeyer Gardens.
“Yonkers continues to secure its reputation as an artistic hub in the region and we are so excited to share that with residents and visitors each year during Yonkers Arts Weekend,” said Mayor Mike Spano. “Yonkers’ rich history, coupled with our thriving arts community, transforms the City, especially the historic waterfront district, into a walkable museum. I’m thrilled that we can once again bring this weekend to our community for the seventh consecutive year. Also, special thanks to Surface of Beauty, Katori Walker, Daisy Rossetti, Shanequa Benitez, David Boyajian, and Executive Director of Yonkers Arts, Ray Wilcox, who have left their creative mark on the downtown waterfront area this past year.”
This year, YAW will showcase a wide range of exhibitions, free art workshops, and musical performances across 4 dynamic venues including:
-Pop-up galleries in the Downtown Waterfront District
-The 17th Annual YoHo Artist Open Studios (540/578 Nepperhan Ave, Yonkers, NY 10701) at the historic Alexander Smith Carpet Mills, and now designated the Carpet Mills Arts District
-Untermyer Gardens (945 N Broadway, Yonkers, NY 10701), music by the Untermyer Performing Arts Council
-Hudson River Museum (511 Warburton Ave, Yonkers, NY 10701) – new programs and workshops to be announced soon.
“At YAW you don’t have to be an art connoisseur to enjoy or find something that will appeal to you – it’s a fun experience for everyone!," said Yonkers Artist, Katori Walker.
Yonkers Arts Weekend is produced by the City of Yonkers Planning & Development Department, along with the Downtown/Waterfront BID. Community partners and sponsors for YAW include: US+U/Warburton Galerie, YOHO artists and Carpet Mills Arts District (CMAD), Yonkers Arts, Hudson River Museum, Blue Door Art Center, Riverfront Art Gallery, Sawyer Place, RXR Realty (Developers/Owner), Untermeyer Gardens Conservatory, the Parks Department, the South Broadway BID, and AMS Acquisitions.
The full weekend’s schedule of events and galleries will soon be announced.
