Yonkers, NY – March 5, 2019 – Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano today announced he is postponing his previously scheduled State of the City Address to instead focus his efforts on advocating state leaders in Albany for additional state education aid for Yonkers. New York State is expected to pass its budget by April 1st, giving Yonkers a month to rally its stakeholders and call on state leaders to ensure Yonkers is provided funding needed to avoid major cuts and layoffs to Yonkers Public Schools.

“While every year I look forward to giving our residents updates on all the transformative initiatives happening in Yonkers, I feel it is my duty as mayor to spend my time in Albany and meeting with our state leaders about the desperate needs of our Yonkers schools,” said Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano. “My total focus now is to devote all my energy and resources to advocate for our students, teachers and administration to ensure they are funded fairly and equitably.  Our State Capitol has helped us fill budget gaps in the past, but the days of temporary “band-aids” to fix our City budget must end. We have been underfunded from Albany for years and there must be a permanent, structural change to the state education aid formula for the City of Yonkers moving forward.”

Mayor Spano’s State of the City Address was scheduled for March 13th. A new date for the annual presentation has not yet been determined.
