YONKERS, NY – January 7, 2019 – Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano and Superintendent of Schools Dr. Edwin M. Quezada announced today they will launch the 2019 Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Poem/Essay/Video Contest on Wednesday, January 9. This year’s theme, Black Migrations, emphasizes the movement of people of African descent to new destinations and subsequently to new social realities.

“Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s message, ideals and beliefs are as prominent today as they were since the days of some of the greatest movements for equality and social change. However, today’s new social realities are now part of how African Americans rise to various roles in society,” said Mayor Mike Spano. “Each year, I’m excited to see the amazing poetry, essays and videos submissions and witness how students are able to express their views on Dr. King’s message through the different platforms.”

Mayor Spano will select one poem from grades 1-4, one essay from grades 5-8 and one video from grades 9-12. The winning poem, essay and video will be displayed at Yonkers City Hall and online for Yonkers residents to enjoy. Winners will be presented a certificate from Mayor Spano and will be asked to present their work at the City’s Annual Black History Month Celebration at Yonkers City Hall on Friday, February 15, 2019 at 6:00 pm.

Dr. Edwin M. Quezada, Superintendent of Schools stated, “This annual celebration of Dr. King’s contributions to civil rights for all people regardless of their diverse background, as well as the civility of non-violent protest and resistance, are important lessons for all of our students.  This is an exemplary teachable moment that provides an opportunity for students to creatively demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of the contributions of African Americans to our country, and the world.”

The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Poem/Essay/Video Contest is open to all primary and secondary Yonkers students; only one poem, essay or video may be submitted per student.
