
YONKERS, NY – October 1, 2018 – Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano today announced the city will host its first-ever “Salute & Serve” initiative on Thursday, October 18, 2018 in honor of Yonkers veteran Staff Sgt. Courtney A. Hollinsworth, who was killed in action in 2007. “Salute & Serve” is an opportunity for the community to thank local veterans for their service by volunteering their time to a veteran and taking them to lunch/coffee or a haircut. The City also will sponsor a men’s tie drive, beginning October 1, to benefit veterans who are attending job interviews.
On October 18, volunteers will be paired with a local veteran and visit area restaurants, cafes and barbershops where discounted services will be provided (with proof of veteran ID) to those participating in “Salute & Serve.”

“Staff Sgt. Courtney A. Hollinsworth was one of many Yonkers veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country,” said Mayor Spano. “Salute & Serve is a small, yet poignant gesture we can offer our veterans. We hope this opportunity will foster relationships and a deeper appreciation of our armed services who selflessly dedicate their lives for our freedoms. I urge our residents, if they can, to carve out time out of their day on October 18th to say thank you and lend a helping hand.”
In order be part of “Salute & Serve,” all volunteers must pre-register at salute&serve@yonkersny.gov. Veterans interested in participating are encouraged to contact the Yonkers Office of Veteran Services at 914-377-6700. All participants must register by Monday, October 15th.
Yonkers resident Staff Sgt. Courtney A. Hollinsworth, born October 18, 1980, attended Yonkers Public Schools and was an active member of his community and church. Shortly after graduation, Hollinsworth enlisted in the United States Army at the age of 17. While in the service, he moved up the ranks and served in several tours of duty while earning various awards and commendations. Hollinsworth’s last tour in 2007 to Baghdad, Iraq resulted in his death on September 9, 2007.
