YONKERS, NY – August 29, 2018 – Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano was joined today at Thomas Cornell Academy in the City of Yonkers by School Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Edwin Quezada; Yonkers City Council; Thomas Cornell Academy Principal, Dr. Edward Beglane; Board of Education Trustees and event sponsors to distribute over 400 backpacks filled with school supplies to Thomas Cornell Academy students as part of the Mayor’s annual “Backpack to School” Drive.

Through donations from Yonkers residents and City employees, along with local sponsors Heavenly Productions Foundation, Empire City Casino, Elite Investigations Ltd, Rock & Rod’s Collector Car Club, Castle Royale and Sears, Mayor Spano’s annual donation drive has now distributed backpacks and school supplies to nearly 6,000 public school students in the City of Yonkers over the past seven years.

“The continued success of our “Backpack to School” Drive speaks volumes to the strength of our community,” Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano said. “Providing backpacks and supplies to Yonkers students goes a long way to ensure a successful start to a new school year. I want to thank our sponsors, along with all of the residents and businesses for donating supplies at our drop-off locations throughout the City.  This drive is successful because of your support to the community.”

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Edwin M. Quezada added, “On behalf of the students at Thomas Cornell Academy, we would like to thank all the sponsors, residents and families who participated in this drive.  The academic success of our students requires the support of our entire community.  Our children’s achievement is enriched when the community demonstrates a commitment to education and to the children of Yonkers.”

According to the National Retail Federation, families in the United States will spend over $29 billion on backpacks and school supplies this time of the year.
