The Fleet Services Unit is located at 1106 Yonkers Ave. The unit is comprised of a Lieutenant, 2 Police Officers, and a civilian mechanic. We also have “Fleet Liaisons” designated in each precinct, command or division to assist in coordinating and maintaining each unit’s vehicles and related equipment.
The Yonkers Police Department’s fleet is as diverse as the community we serve. Vehicles range from the largest in the fleet, a 1998 International Mobile Command Center, to the smallest, a pair of 1986 Kawasaki 250cc dirt bikes. The primary marked patrol vehicle is the Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor. Our primary unmarked administrative vehicle is the Chevrolet Impala. Some of the other vehicles utilized by the Police Department include the Chevrolet Tahoe SSV, Dodge Durango, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Dodge Charger, Chevrolet Express 3500, Ford F550, Harley Davidson FLHTPI and Kawasaki KZ1000 motorcycles, and the Westward GO-4 three wheeled scooter. There are also numerous “undercover” vehicles deployed by the Yonkers Police Department.
The Fleet Services Unit is responsible for the purchasing of all types of vehicles and the subsequent up-fitting of them with the appropriate emergency equipment required by the unit that the vehicle is assigned to. Emergency lighting, radios, and sirens are installed in almost every vehicle used by the Yonkers Police. Many of our vehicles also require custom installations of different types of law enforcement equipment. All of this equipment requires periodic maintenance and repair throughout the life of the vehicle. This maintenance is handled almost exclusively in-house by our mechanic. Additionally, when a vehicle is permanently removed from service, Fleet Services must uninstall all of this equipment before we can auction off the decommissioned vehicle.
The Fleet Services Unit operates and maintains the Mobile Command Center. This vehicle serves as the Department’s portable command and control center during unusual events and disasters. This Mobile Command Center has various capabilities, which make it an important asset to the Department and City. We also utilize the Mobile Command Center for public relation purposes such as parades and community events.
We are also responsible for the maintenance and procurement of the Department’s portable and mobile communications equipment. This consists of approximately 300 portable (hand-held) radios and 300 mobile (vehicle) radios.
Fleet Services purchases and coordinates the servicing of the Trek Police Patrol bicycles and the specialized equipment for the officers assigned to “Bike Duty”.
Finally, Fleet Services purchases, stores, and distributes the first aid and medical supplies for the Yonkers Police Department.
