Park Rangers

PARK RANGERS

Uniformed park rangers work under the supervision of the Yonkers Police Department to maintain a safe
and enjoyable atmosphere in the county's parks. They assist park users, provide information on
park rules and procedures, help in searches for lost children, perform basic first aid on occasion
and make regular security checks of buildings and facilities.

To qualify, applicants must:

  • be a high school graduate
  • be at least 19 years of age
  • be a U.S. citizen
  • be a resident of the City of Yonkers
  • possess a valid New York State driver's license by the lime of appointment.

Note: Accepted candidates must attend a 3 week training program at the Westchester County
Police Academy.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

When employed as a Park Ranger, under the supervision of the Yonkers Police Department, Park Rangers perform routine patrol, traffic direction and crowd control functions. They do not patrol the parkways, issue citations or carry a firearm. They do carry an expandable baton and defensive OC chemical spray. These are temporary, seasonal
positions. Does related work as required.

 

EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Illustrative Only)

Patrols City of Yonkers Parks to protect the City and the general public from vandalism, disorderly conduct and violations of the law, to help provide a safe recreational environment at City Parks;

Directs and gives information to the public concerning facilities involved and participates in crowd control;

Prepares and submits periodic and other reports as required; Assists in administration of first aid;

Directs traffic;

May perform other incidental tasks, as needed;

May use computer applications or other automated systems such as spreadsheets, word processing, calendar, e-mail and database software in performing work assignments.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE. SKILLS. ABILITIES AND ATTRIBUTES:

Good knowledge of principles and practices of first aid; good knowledge of basic law
enforcement methods and techniques; working knowledge of crowd control techniques;
ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; ability to qualify in handling
firearms; ability to use computer applications such as spreadsheets, word processing, email
and database software; ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in
English sufficiently to perform the essential duties of the position; reliable; observant;
physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: 

A high school or equivalency diploma.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

Possession of a valid New York State Drivers license.
