Section 91-36B of the City Code requires that residents must place all garbage and bulk at the curb NO EARLIER than sundown the evening prior to your scheduled pick up.  Please do not put garbage in supermarket shopping bags. Small bags may break causing garbage to be scattered on or around your property.  Failure to do so could result in a $1,500 fine.

During compost season, leaves and brush should be placed in open containers or paper bags (no plastic bags) and be put out for pick-up on Wednesday’s (leaves and brush will be picked up on your second garbage day for the rest of the year).  Failure to comply is a Class III offense with fines of up to $1,500 under Section 92-5C of the City Code.

Curbside Refuse Pickup

Residents must use barrels that are not larger than 30 gallons.  Plastic bags must be used for refuse and not heavier than 50 pounds.  This is a Class III Offense under §91-17 of the City Code which is punishable of a $1,500 fine.

NO commercial garbage, construction material, compressed gas tanks, motor oil, medical waste, rocks or dirt are allowed for regular trash pick-up.

NO tires, rims or car batteries will be picked up curbside.

NO grass clippings.  The City of Yonkers will not pick up grass clippings and they cannot be delivered to the Organic Yard.  Grass clipping should be left on your lawn.

Non-Metal Bulk Removal

The City will collect NON-METAL bulk items every week from private homes and buildings with six (6) units or less.  Residents may place one (1) NON-METAL bulk item curbside for pick-up on their second scheduled collection day of the week (Thursday or Friday).  NON-METAL bulk items are classified as mattresses, box springs, tables, chair, couches, sleeper sofas (tied closed) and rugs cut and tied in 3-foot lengths. 

Monday through Saturday from 7:30AM – 4:15PM, residents may also drop off bulk items at the City’s Recycling Center, 735 Saw Mill River Road.  Residents are also encouraged to drop-off electronic equipment (computer monitors, TV’s (televisions larger than 36” can be picked up curbside by appointment only which can be arranged by calling 914-377-HELP), food processors, paper shredders, small appliances, CD players, Ni-Cad (nickel cadmium) batteries, etc.) to the Recycling Center.

When bringing items to the Recycling Center, you must be a Yonkers resident with valid identification.

Metal Bulk Removal

Metal Bulk is classified as washers, dryers, refrigerators (door must be removed), air conditioners (Freon will be removed free-of-charge by the City of Yonkers at the Recycling Center), bed frames, stoves, metal shelf units, bicycles and hot water heaters.  To have these items picked up, you must make an appointment by calling 914-377-HELP (4357) or they may be brought to the Recycling Center located at 735 Saw Mill River Road.
