The Environmental Services Division is responsible for the collection of approximately 313 million pounds of refuse per year from private residences, apartment complexes, municipal housing complexes, public schools, municipal buildings, condominiums, cooperative units and non-profit organizations. They make 90,000 stops per week or about 4,590,000 stops per year.

The Division is responsible for the collection, transportation and disposal of the City’s solid waste, recycling and debris material. As part of the City’s Recycling Program, the Division collects newspapers, leaves for compost, and co-mingle recyclable goods at curbside every other week.  Buildings over six (6) units speak to your super, landlord and/or management company for bulk disposal.  The collection process also includes weekly pickup of nonmetal bulk items, as well as the pickup of metal bulk items. Bulk metal pickups are also performed on an appointment basis. In a typical year, more than 8,000 tons of pulp, such as newspapers, and about 3,000 tons of recyclable materials are collected and recycled.

The Division also oversees the Mayor’s Pride-in-Work Task Force which helps to improve the quality of life for the citizens of Yonkers through litter pickup and debris removal, especially at problem locations. Two trucks are assigned solely to empty more that 300 litter baskets on a daily basis throughout the City, and twice a day pickups are performed in the downtown area.
