YONKERS, NY - The Yonkers City Council has passed two pieces legislation that came about as a result of the Matthew Wallace tragedy, a Taxicab Bill of Rights and a measure that requires certain businesses which sell alcohol to operate surveillance cameras. YONKERS, NY - Oral arguments were heard today in the landmark case New Yorkers for Students' Educational Rights (NYSER) v. State of New York, a lawsuit which seeks equitable school funding. The City of Yonkers had sought to intervene in the action on behalf of the plaintiffs, students who have been denied the opportunity for a "sound basic education" by Albany's systematic underfunding of schools.

The Yonkers City Council called on New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo today to take steps to end the “Gap Elimination Adjustment” (GEA) that they say has compounded the historic under-funding of City schools by Albany. The Council voted earlier this year to initiate a lawsuit to overturn the GEA, which has deprived Yonkers of over $110 million of school aid since 2010.

Following a vote by the Yonkers City Council, the City of Yonkers has commenced legal action against the State of New York by seeking to intervene in New Yorkers for Students' Educational Rights (NYSER) v. State of New York, a lawsuit which seeks equitable school funding. Council President Liam J. McLaughlin and others say the State should properly fund schools, and could settle the suit with funds from the recent $3 billion BNP Paribas settlement.
YONKERS, NY – Yonkers City Council members are drafting a package of legislation to respond to the growing budget crisis the City faces following a $55 million accounting error by the Yonkers Board of Education. One measure to retain outside counsel to better understand the City’s legal options to challenge the new State budget review process is expected to pass as early as next week.
