One-Day-A-Week Garbage Collection Starts Monday in Yonkers
Important information regarding refuse and recycling collection changes outlined below

Yonkers' new ONE-DAY-A-WEEK GARBAGE COLLECTION schedule begins on Monday, June 28 citywide. All residential customers will have curbside garbage pick-up reduced from two-days per week to one-day per week. In addition, the collection of NON-METAL BULK items will no longer be offered; however, METAL BULK materials may be discarded by scheduled appointment with the city's Action Center: 377-HELP (4357).

All of these changes and other information regarding the collection of refuse, recycling, bulk materials and other waste are outlined below. Residents will now be limited to one-day a week curbside garbage pick-up and therefore must be careful to abide by all of the following collection guidelines.

Recycling Calendar

As noted on the new calendar, RECYCLING COLLECTION HAS BEEN CANCELLED FOR WEDNESDAY, JULY 7. City Hall offices will be closed on Monday, July 5th. Therefore, the garbage collection schedule for that week will be as follows:

MONDAY, JULY 5: Holiday Observance - City Hall Closed

TUESDAY, JULY 6: (Monday ) Southwest Yonkers

WEDNESDAY, JULY 7: (Tuesday) Northwest Yonkers

THURSDAY, JULY 8: Northeast Yonkers

FRIDAY, JULY 9: Southeast Yonkers

Automated Phone Service

In addition to a residential mailing, a public service announcement airing on City Hall TV and the information available on our website, the city has also implemented an automated notification system. Residents will be receiving official notifications from the City of Yonkers and are encouraged to listen to the messages in their entirety as they will provide important information on all service changes as well as emergency notices.

REFUSE, RECYCLING & BULK REMOVAL GUIDELINES

**Due to the route and schedule changes, it is extremely important for residents to abide by the following garbage disposal regulations to ensure the safety of the City's Public Works employees.

Curbside Refuse Pickup

Residents must use barrels that are NOT larger than 32 (thirty two) gallons.

*Plastic bags, at least 1.5 to 2.0 milliliters or greater, must be used for refuse and not heavier than 50 (fifty) lbs.

Do not place garbage in plastic grocery bags.

NO commercial refuse, construction material, compressed gas tanks, motor oil, medical waste, rocks or dirt are allowed for regular trash pick up.

NO tires, rims or car batteries will be picked up curbside. Separated tires and rims, along with car batteries may be brought to the Recycling Center.

NO GRASS CLIPPINGS or YARD WASTE. The City of Yonkers will not pick up grass clippings and they cannot be delivered to the Organic Yard. Grass clippings should be left on your lawn. Yard waste may be brought to the Organic Yard (see below for address and hours of operation).

Branches not more than 3 (three) inches in diameter, bundled, and tied in lengths of no more than 3 (three) feet in length will be collected at curbside. A maximum of 3 (three) bundles will be accepted per household on each curbside refuse pick-up.

Metal Bulk Removal

Metal bulk removal is available to 6 (six) families and under only. All others must make arrangements with the landlord or managing agency.

Residents must make an appointment for removal of metal bulk items by calling 377-HELP (4357). Items must be placed at the curb NO EARLIER than sundown the evening prior to their scheduled pick up.

Metal Bulk is classified as washers, dryers, refrigerators (doors must be removed), air conditioners (Freon will be removed free of charge by the City of Yonkers at the Recycling Center), bed frames, stoves, metal shelf units, bicycles and hot water heaters. To have these items picked up you must make an appointment by calling 377-(HELP) 4357 or they may be brought to the Recycling Center. (See rules and regulations below)

Non-Metal Bulk Items 

For six-family dwellings and under only... Non-metal bulk removal is no longer available. Residents will now have to take non-metal items such as but not limited to mattresses, sofas, tables and chairs, scrap wood, carpeting, toilets, sinks, bathtubs, pools and other non-metal bulk items to the City's Recycling Center, 735 Saw Mill River Road, Mon-Sat. 7:30-4:00pm or arrange to have them privately carted.

All others (buildings greater than six units) must make arrangements with the landlord or managing agency for disposal of non-metal bulk items.

E-Waste

Computer monitors, TV's, food processors, paper shredders, small appliances, CD players, Ni-Cad(nickel cadmium) batteries etc...anything with a plug must be brought to the recycling center for proper disposal.

Any E-Waste left at curbside will NOT be collected as refuse pick-up.

Rules and Regulations

CITY RESIDENTS are allowed to dispose of one load per day, and up to two loads per week from a non-commercial pick up or automobile. No commercial vehicles, trailers, or rented vehicles are allowed. Use is restricted to six family buildings or less.

Any work vehicle appearing to be a contractor's work vehicle indicated by roof racks, tool bins, contractor tools, or uniforms will NOT be permitted facility access. This also refers to pick up trucks with built up sides, dump bodies, or vans with no passenger windows. Any debris considered to be commercial will not be accepted.

Proof of residence with corresponding license and registration of vehicle being used must be presented upon attendant's request.

Procedures

All materials must be separated by category and placed in the container or area as directed by the attendant.

*NO RAW GARBAGE IS EVER ACCEPTED AT THE RECYCLING CENTER

No wet paint, roofing materials, or hazardous waste accepted.

No oil or grease accepted.

Tires must be separated from rims.

Construction and demolition debris must have proper City of Yonkers permits. (Building, sidewalk, etc.)

Dumping privileges may be denied to anyone who ignores attendant's directions or is unruly or abusive to attendants. Such action will be reported and may result in suspension of dumping privileges.

ORGANIC YARD GUIDELINES

Residents are encouraged to bring all yard waste to the Organic Yard.

Residents must provide matching license and registration for vehicles or be a registered landscaper.

WASTE ACCEPTED: LEAVES & BRUSH

NO CUT GRASS ACCEPTED

NO DIRT OR ROCK ACCEPTED

ABSOLUTELY NO RAW GARBAGE ACCEPTED

One trip per day. Two trips per week maximum.

Plastic bags must be emptied and removed by the resident.

Brown composting bags are acceptable any others must be approved by the recycling manager.
