1Yonkers, N.Y. (March 5, 2008) -- Yonkers Police Commissioner Edmund Hartnett announced Wednesday the details of a drug raid that led to the arrest of two Yonkers men for drug possession and exposed a gruesome dogfighting ring. The investigation and search of 34 Alida Street was led by the Yonkers Narcotics Unit that uncovered a total of 6 ounces of cocaine, nearly $16,000 in cash and drug trafficking paraphernalia. However, the most grisly discovery was a pit bull fighting pen and training area located in the basement of the house as well as 15 malnourished pit bulls living in deplorable conditions in the garage.

During the raid, Peter Byrne, 25, and Anthony Gonzalez, 24, were arrested on drug possession charges. The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) is investigating the evidence of animal cruelty which could lead to felony dogfighting charges or misdemeanor cruelty charges. The dogs were brought to the Yonkers Animal Shelter and will be treated by veterinarians.

“We’re cracking down on drug trafficking which is often tied to other illegal activities like dogfighting and gambling.” said Hartnett. “This is a significant bust and an example of excellent investigative police work.”
