City of Yonkers to Offer Free Aarp Tax Counseling Program to Senior Residents

YONKERS, NY –January 30, 2018 – Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano today announced that the City’s Office for the Aging together with the Will Branch of the Yonkers Public Library will offer a TAX-AIDE program February 5 through April 16, 2018from the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP).

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide is a program that allows for low to moderate income taxpayers to have more discretionary income for everyday essentials, such as food and housing, by assisting with tax services and ensuring that those taxpayers receive applicable credits and deductions. 

“Paying your taxes can be a stressful and confusing process and we want to make sure we give every effort to provide our senior residents with all of the aid that they qualify for,” said Mayor Mike Spano. “This tax aide program is designed to assist seniors every step of the way.”

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide is free for taxpayers with low and moderate income, with special attention paid to those 60 and older. Through assistance by a team of trained volunteers, this program has helped low to moderate income individuals for more than 40 years. 

Trained volunteer tax counselors will be on hand to assist Yonkers residents that qualify at the following times and locations. No appointment is necessary; residents will be assisted on a first-come first-serve basis.  

This free service is available February 5 through April 16, 2018 at:

·       Office for the Aging
Peter Chema Community Center,  
435  Riverdale Ave, Yonkers, 10705
10:00am-12:00pm and 1:00pm-3:00pm (Closed on Feb 12 and Feb 19 to observe holidays)

·       Yonkers Public Library
Grinton I. Will Branch, 1500 Central Park Ave
Tuesdays & Wednesdays 

All required tax reporting forms will be available at the Tax-Aide sites. AARP coordinators for the program request that residents bring with them their previous year’s tax returns, W-2 and/or 1099 forms, NYS picture iD , Social Security Cards (or ITIN documentation) for all on the return, all other documentation concerning their income for 2017.
