YONKERS, NY – April 24, 2017 – Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano today announced the City will begin distributing new, free recycling bins to residents starting Tuesday, April 25 from 7:30AM – 3:00PM at the Yonkers Recycling Center at 735 Saw Mill River Road, while supplies last. “Get Your New Bin” pilot program, coordinated in partnership with the Yonkers Green City Advisory Committee, is aimed to save taxpayer dollars and to increase the city’s refuse recycling rate.

“As a leader in sustainability, Yonkers continues to find new ways to encourage our residents to be active participants in creating a greener, cleaner city,” said Mayor Spano. “Recycling is not only good for the environment but it’s good for our taxpayers too. Recycling is an easy and effective way to make a difference in our environment and our pockets.”

In 2015 alone, Yonkers diverted nearly 70,000 tons from the waste stream, saving taxpayers nearly $1.9 million.  Currently, Yonkers recycles 45% of its waste, well above the Environmental Protection Agency’s goal of 35%.

“Because simplifying recycling is key to its success, the Yonkers Green City Advisory Committee is pleased to partner with Mayor Spano and Yonkers to further promote recycling in a city that is already a leader in sustainability,” said Heliana Higbie, Chair of the Yonkers Green City Advisory Committee.

Added Mayor Spano, “I want to extend my special thanks to the Yonkers Green City Advisory Committee for their partnership and continually providing innovative programs for our city.”

To obtain a new recycling bin, residents must provide a valid New York State photo ID for proof of residency. Bins will be made available to residences of six families or less on a first serve, first come service, while supplies last. After April 25th, remaining bins will be available Tuesdays – Fridays, 9:00-11:00AM at the Yonkers Recycling Center.

For more information on the new recycling bin program, residents can contact the Mayor’s Helpline at 914-377-HELP (4357).
