YONKERS, NY – April 20, 2017 – Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano and the Yonkers Department of Veterans Services today announced they will sponsor the first-ever Veterans Monuments Essay Contest in appreciation of Veterans Monuments and the principles for which they stand. The contest asks students to reflect and research on what a Veterans Monument represents to them and their family.  The contest is open to all Yonkers students from grades 5th-8th.

“Students learning the history behind the City’s Veterans Monuments will provide our younger generation a deeper appreciation of our veterans and the sacrifices they made for our freedoms,” said Mayor Mike Spano.

One winner will be chosen from each grade level from 5th – 8th grade; one winner will be selected to read their essay at the City of Yonkers Memorial Day Ceremony at City Hall on Memorial Day, May 29th 2017, at 9AM.  Each grade winner will also receive a brand new iPad tablet.

“The Veterans Monuments in our community honor those who served in our Armed Forces and the supreme sacrifice for our freedom,” said Louis Navarro, Director of the Yonkers Department of Veterans Services & Army Veteran. “This contest is a great opportunity for our students to connect to our local veterans and be reminded that freedom is never free.”

All entries must include a cover page with the student’s name, grade level, school, home address and contact phone number.  Students can mail or drop off their submissions at the Department of Veterans Services, 120 New Main Street, Yonkers, NY 10701.  Students may also email essays to Veterans@YonkersNY.gov.  The essay must be at least 250 words and a picture of the monument must be submitted along with the essay.

The deadline for submissions is May 12th and winners will be notified by May 19th.  For more information, contact the Department of Veterans Services at (914)-377-6700 or visit www.YonkersNY.gov/Veterans.
