Mayor Spano Announces Yonkers Office for The Aging to Distribute Coupons to Seniors for Local Farmers Markets

YONKERS, NY –July 12, 2016– Mayor Mike Spano today announced the Yonkers Office for the Aging once again will distribute farmers market coupons to qualified Yonkers seniors. The coupons will be available at the Office for the Aging on Monday, August 1 and Tuesday, August 2nd at the Peter Chema Community Center, located at 435 Riverdale Avenue from  9:00AM - 12:00PM  and  1:00PM - 4:00PM.

The coupons are available to qualified applicants 60 years or older and who are currently receiving or eligible to receive supplemental security income, public assistance, food stamps, Section 8 housing subsidy or have a monthly income of $1,832.00 per month or less for a one person household; $ 2,470.00 per month or less for a two person household and $ 3,108.00 per month or less for a three person household.  Photo ID and proof of age and Yonkers residency are required.  No appointments are needed; coupons offered on a first come, first served basis while supplies last.  Yonkers seniors are able to use the coupons at the farmers markets located throughout the area. 

“We encourage our seniors to make use of this money-saving service that will encourage them to shop and contribute to our local farms, while also enjoying  fresh, homegrown produce and products,” said Mayor Mike Spano.

Yonkers-own St. John’s Church, located at South Broadway and Hudson Street in Getty Square, hosts its own farmers market every Thursday from 8AM to 4PM until November 17th.  Additionally, the Saw Mill River Youth Market located at Van der Donck Park in Larkin Plaza is open on Friday afternoons until October 28th.

Local Farmers Markets give Yonkers residents the opportunity to buy New York farm grown products directly from the farmers, something that is especially important in lower-income and underserved areas.
