Mayor Spano declares June 11 Yonkers Thrives Day at Westchester’s Ridge Hill

YONKERS, NY – June 2, 2016 – Mayor Mike Spano today announced that Saturday, June 11 as Yonkers Thrives Day at Westchester’s Ridge Hill Shopping Center – a fun afternoon of engaging activities for children that promote the importance of summer learning. From 12pm to 3pm, local youth will have the opportunity to participate in outdoor learning and adventure play, enjoy healthy snacks and much more.  Mayor Spano will be joined by the Chancellor of the State University of New York, Nancy Zimpher and Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Edwin Quezada to kick off the festivities in Ridge Hill’s Town Square on Second Street. 

“Since its launch last year, Yonkers Thrives has been identifying key pressure points in a student’s educational career that may influence better outcomes for the child,” said Mayor Spano. “Yonkers Thrives Day is an opportunity for our network of community organizations to collaborate for the benefit of our students, specifically on the rewards of summer learning. Special thanks to Ridge Hill and all the sponsoring participants for joining our efforts to improve the lives of our Yonkers children.” 

Organized by Yonkers Thrives, a public-private community-wide organization that aims to improve educational and wellness outcomes for children and youth in Yonkers, Yonkers Thrives Day will provide opportunities for students to sign up for summer learning activities. Upon completion of these activities, the students will be eligible to receive gift cards and promotional prizes courtesy of Ridge Hill and Yonkers Thrives. 

Yonkers Thrives Day activities and sponsors include:

· Yonkers Police Department - Child ID cards and DNA kits

· Yonkers Fire Department – interactive smoke house

· Early Einstein Early Learning Center - book giveaways, music

· Community Play Adventure Experience (Sarah Lawrence College)

· Greyston - teaching math using art

· Hudson River Museum - constructing a balloon powered cardboard car

· iFly - video, STEM education

· Lanza Learning Center - science experiments 

· Montefiore Medical Group Urgent Care & Primary Care – Summer UV Protection

· Legoland Discovery Center - Lego building

· YMCA - storytelling

· Whole Foods - healthy smoothies

Studies have shown that summer learning is essential in the educational development of a child. Children lose about two months of knowledge over the summer months, including math computational skills. Teachers typically spend four to six weeks re-teaching material students have forgotten over the summer.
