YONKERS, NY – April 19, 2016 – Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano today announced the City of Yonkers is partnering with Alamo Drafthouse Cinema to provide a free screening of the Academy Award nominated documentary WASTE LAND, Friday, April 22 at 10:30AM at Alamo’s Yonkers location, 2548 Central Park Avenue. The complimentary admission is in celebration of Earth Day as the movie depicts a group of Brazilian artists who repurpose recyclable materials to create contemporary art.

“On Earth Day, we are proud to partner with Alamo, which time and again, demonstrates community engagement and leadership. Viewing ‘Waste Land’ is a teachable moment for us as it is an impactful and telling story of how we can better our Earth and its future, even on a local scale here in Yonkers.” said Mayor Spano

Filmed over nearly three years, WASTE LAND follows renowned artist Vik Muniz as he journeys from his home base in Brooklyn to his native Brazil and the world's largest garbage dump, Jardim Gramacho, located on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. There he photographs an eclectic band of "catadores" -- or self-designated pickers of recyclable materials. Muniz's initial objective was to "paint" the catadores with garbage. However, his collaboration with these inspiring characters as they recreate photographic images of themselves out of garbage reveals both the dignity and despair of the catadores as they begin to re-imagine their lives. Walker (DEVIL'S PLAYGROUND, BLINDSIGHT, COUNTDOWN TO ZERO) has great access to the entire process and, in the end, offers stirring evidence of the transformative power of art and the alchemy of the human spirit.

“We're always happy to be able to offer screenings to the local community, and Earth Day is the perfect occasion to share a film like ‘Waste Land’,” said Cristina Cacioppo, Alamo Drafthouse Yonkers.

WASTE LAND premiered at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival and went on to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature, as well as win over 50 other film awards including the International Documentary Association's Best Documentary Award, which was handed to director Lucy Walker inside a garbage bag.
