Mayor Mike Spano Names Yonkers Middle High School September 2015 School of the Month
YONKERS, NY – September 30 – Joined by students, teachers, administrators and members of the theatre and debate clubs, Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano today awarded Yonkers Middle High School with the City’s School of the Month Award. Mayor Spano praised the school’s rigorous International Baccalaureate program, citing Yonkers Middle High School’s perennial high rankings. Earlier this year, Yonkers Middle High School once again made the U.S. News and World Report’s list of top schools, ranking number 18 in New York State and third in Westchester County.
“We face tremendous challenges here in Yonkers – every big city does – but we also have incredible success stories,” said Mayor Mike Spano. “Yonkers Middle High School is one of the very best schools not only in Westchester, but in the entire State of New York and in the country.”
Yonkers Middle High School offers an International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme whereby traditional school subjects are taught with a focus on global citizenship, inquiry learning and thematic interdisciplinary units. Under the admission-based International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, students are guided as they strive to develop the characteristics of IB Learners: inquirers, knowledgeable, thinkers, communicators, principled, open-minded, caring, risk-takers, balanced and reflective. Students take New York State Regents examinations as well as IB examinations and are required to take a Foreign Language and a visual art or music course.
At the awards ceremony, Mayor Spano also praised the school’s transitional bilingual education program and called upon three YMHS students to read essays detailing their immigration from a foreign, non-English speaking country to Yonkers. Additionally, Mayor Spano and guests, which included Board of Education Trustees President Dr. Nader Sayegh, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Michael Yazurlo and Yonkers Federation of Teachers President Pat Puleo, witnessed performances by the school’s acclaimed choir, theatre program and debate team.
“As we embark on another school year it’s wonderful to see Yonkers’ schools collaborating with their community and experiencing continued success. On behalf of the Board of Education Trustees, we applaud the efforts of Yonkers Middle High School for creating an environment in which students can thrive. We congratulate them on receiving this well-deserved award,” said Board of Education President Dr. Nader J. Sayegh.
"Yonkers Middle High School continues to provide the opportunity for student to excel in the rigorous International Baccalaureate Diploma program. This is accomplished through the hard work of Principal Jane Wermuth and all of the dedicated teachers, staff, PTA, parents and students. The diversity of the students enrich the international underpinnings of the program and reflect the greater Yonkers community. I’m proud ‘School of the Month’ has been added to their list of accolades,” said Dr. Michael Yazurlo, Superintendent of Schools.
