School 22 Awarded Mayor Spano's School of the Month Award for October 2015
YONKERS, NY – November 18, 2015 – City officials gathered at School 22 today to present Mayor Spano’s School of the Month Award for October 2015 to the deserving administration, faculty, staff, parents and students at School 22. Under the leadership of Principal Leslie Dildy, School 22 has created an exceptional learning environment that focuses on greater parental involvement and places an emphasis on contributing to charitable causes.
“As we enter the season of giving thanks, I’m proud to recognize School 22 and say thank you for all that they do for the community,” said Mayor Spano. “By recognizing the importance of giving back, the School 22 family is building a stronger Yonkers for all of us.”
School 22 maintains giving back to the community at the forefront of all they do. Throughout the year, students participate in several outreach programs including an annual Thanksgiving Drive, Toys for Tots Drive, Coat Drive and Pennies for Patients Initiative.
Another key focus at School 22 is to engage parents in the learning process, adhering to the notion that ‘education begins at home.’ School 22 directly involves parents in their children’s education through the “Welcome Wednesday” initiative that invites parents, grandparents and guardians to visit the school each week to read to their child’s class.
“Ensuring that our students can read – and read well – is imperative to their future success, which is why the Welcome Wednesday reading program at School 22 is so important. The school truly embraces the concept that it takes a village to raise a child and the family atmosphere at School 22 is evident and empowering,” said Dr. Michael Yazurlo, Superintendent of Yonkers Public Schools.
“On behalf of the Board of Education trustees and the administration I would like to commend School 22 on their continued achievements,” said Board of Education President Dr. Nader J. Sayegh. “Under the direction of Principal Leslie Dildy, this School of the Month Award is yet another recognition for a truly deserving school.”
Mayor Spano’s School of the Month recognition program began in January 2014 as a way to celebrate the significant academic success, extracurricular achievements and community volunteerism of Yonkers’ students, teachers, administration and staff at Yonkers Public Schools.
